SINCLAIR – Gerard Martin, 91, died Nov. 17, 2006, at a Frenchville nursing home, after a short illness. He was born Jan. 23, 1915, near the shores of Long Lake, St. Agatha, the son of Tommy and Elizabeth (Picard) Martin. Gerard attended St. Agatha High School. For many years he was a guide on the Fish River chain of lakes and the head guide for the Rod & Gun Club at Yerxas Sporting Camps on Square Lake. During winters, Gerard worked in various lumber camps throughout the state of Maine. For 25 years, he managed the Tarbel Co., leased land properties along the local lakes. He established his own logging company and dealt in lumber sales until his retirement. Gerard’s love for the outdoors and his great environmental knowledge enabled him to find the best fishing spots and hunting regions in the area. Because of this remarkable talent, his guidance was sought by the many sportsmen who visited the chain lakes region of Northern Aroostook County. It was widely said that today’s modern electronic fish finders could not match Gerard’s expertise and natural fishing skills of the local lakes. In the past several years, he enjoyed cooking various meals and pastries at his home on the thoroughfare in Sinclair. As the family will attest, his absolute finest meals were fish and wild game, cooked to perfection. Gerard was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Gilda (Michaud) Martin in 2001. He was also predeceased by his sister, Germaine Kusser. He is survived by his five sons and two daughters, Robert and his wife, Joline, of Frenchville, Frances and her husband, Patrick Pelletier, of Newington, Conn., Jerry and his wife, Mary, of Glastonbury, Conn., Bernadette Franck of Simi Valley, Calif., Paul of Sinclair, James of Middletown, Conn., and Joel and his wife, Linda, of Bristol, Conn.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday until time of services at the Michaud Funeral Home, St. Agatha. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Sinclair, with the Rev. Philip Cyr officiating. Those who wish may contribute to his memory to Our Lady of the Valley Church Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
