PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – Germaine R. Shumway, 81, of 86 Coakley Road, passed away at her home on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, after a brief illness. Born in Old Town, July 10, 1915, she was the daughter of Frederick and Delia (Lauzier) Brilliant, and had been a resident of Portsmouth for more than 60 years. Germaine was employed for many years at the former Kimball’s Department Store and at Lady Grace. She always kept herself busy, whether in her garden, knitting, or spending time with her family. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Chandler “Bud” Shumway; her son, Bruce Shumway and wife, Susan, of Laconia; her daughter, Jacqueline Rice of Portsmouth; daughter-in-law, Joanna Shumway of Natick, Mass.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Louise Beaulieu of Veazie and Anita Parent of Bangor; brothers, Norman Brilliant and Gerald Brilliant, both of Old Town; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, John Shumway; son-in-law, Verne Rice; and grandchildren, Craig Shumway and Allyson Shumway. Funeral services will be held 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, N.H. Visiting hours will be held from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at the funeral home.
