WINTER HARBOR – Gertrude E. Harrington, 78, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at an Ellsworth healthcare facility after a long illness. She was born Nov. 18, 1926, in Gouldsboro the daughter of Clarence E. and Lydia B. (Young) Haycock. Gertrude was a graduate of Steuben High School, Class of 1944, to which she walked eight miles everyday. She worked at the Stinson Canning Company in Prospect Harbor for many years, and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1986 with 26 years of service. During her time of service, she served two years as officer in charge in Winter Harbor. For many years, she served as a fire phone operator and dispatcher for the Winter Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, and was in charge of blowing the twelve o’clock whistle. Gertrude was a member of the Schoodic Grange of Winter Harbor, the Cushman Grange of Gouldsboro, and the Winter Harbor Cemetery Association. She had many interests, including playing bingo, cards, cooking, following the Boston Red Sox, and enjoying flowers and working in her garden. Gertrude especially enjoyed spending time with her family and going to dances with her husband of 56 years, Walter. In addition to Walter, Gertrude is survived by a son, Gordon Harrington and his wife, Diana; two granddaughters, Melissa Harrington and Tracey Hutchins and her husband, Jeff; four great-grandchildren, Robert, Matthew, Alexis, and Emilee, all of Winter Harbor; two brothers, John Haycock Sr. and his wife, Jane, and Everett Haycock and his wife, Donna; a sister, Jean Noiles and her husband, Robert; a special friend, Gail Backman; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Haycock; and a sister, Thelma Johnson. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, with the Rev. William Sommerville officiating. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Winter Harbor.
