WHITNEYVILLE – Gertrude “Trudy” Schmid Brightly, 77, of Whitneyville, passed away from respiratory failure, Jan. 13, 2004, surrounded by her loving family, at Downeast Community Hospital. Gertrude was born Dec. 2, 1926, in Zwiesel, Germany, the daughter of Karl and Fredia (Fleck) Schmid. In 1963 she came to the United States with her family. She was predeceased by her parents and by her brother Karl Schmid. She leaves behind her loving husband of 39 years, Henry Brightly of Whitneyville; the three greatest joys of her life, her son, Helmut (Mondi) Schmid of Onancock, Va.; two daughters, Renee and Patricia Brightly, both of Whitneyville. Gertrude also leaves behind a sister that she loved and cherished, Emma Spatharis of Mt. Holly, N.J.; a niece that she loved dearly, Gabriella Day and her husband, Terry of Mt. Holly, N.J.; two special relatives, Eric Day and his wife, Monica of New Providence, N.J.; Chris Day and his wife, Marissa of Hillsborough, N.J. Gertrude also leaves behind two special friends, Elaine Jacques of Machias, and Rheba Smith of Whitneyville. Gertrude loved life and her family. She was an avid reader, loved to bake, knit and go bowling. She will be sadly missed by many friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the Whitneyville Library Association, P.O. Box 478, Machias. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Whitneyville Congregational Church. Arrangements are under the care of Cremation Services of Maine, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
