LAMOINE – Gladys Esther Vigent, 91, died May 14, 2006, after a sudden illness. She was born Jan. 4, 1915, in Bangor, the daughter of Purdy Joseph and Natalie I. (Gilman) Smith. She married Leo F. Vigent and they spent summers at their oceanfront cottage at Lamoine Beach. She was a longtime resident of Wells River. She took many trips with the elder hostel. Her travels took her to Alaska, Hawaii, Panama Canal, Norway, Ireland and China, among other places. Gladys was a member of the North Country Chorus for many years. She was a member of the Wells River Congregational Church. She was a retired teacher, having taught in Wells River, Vt., South Ryegate, Vt., and Blue Mountain Union. She was predeceased by her husband, Leo F. Vigent Feb. 4, 1991; and a brother, Gordon Smith. Survivors include five sons, Joseph P. Vigent of North Haverhill, N.H., James G. Vigent of Sacramento, Calif., John F. Vigent of Wallingford, Conn., Jeffrey A. Vigent of North Hampton, Mass., and Jay L. Vigent of Wells River, Vt.; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at the East Lamoine Cemetery, Lamoine.
