EDDINGTON and BREWER – Gloria Aurelia (Tiebor) Andrle, wife of Armand S. Andrle, passed away peacefully March 15, 2007, surrounded by her family at home, after a long illness. Gloria was born in the home of a Swedish mid-wife in 1925, in Tonawanda, N.Y., the eldest child and only daughter of Roland Frederick and Mary (Kaiser) Tiebor. Gloria had two younger brothers, Roland Frederick Jr. and John Edward. She graduated from Tonawanda High School, Tonawanda, N.Y., in 1943 attended college for one year at Albany State College and then transferred to the Edward J. Meyer Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Buffalo, N.Y., graduating in 1948. Armand and Gloria became engaged while Armand was employed as a dentist by the Veterans Administration Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.; they were married in 1950, moved to Brewer in 1951 and finally settled in Eddington in 1985. Gloria was heavily involved within her community, as well as in many charitable organizations. She was a member and officer of the Altar-Rosary Society of St. Joseph Church, Brewer; a member of the Brewer Community Service Council, where she held the office of treasurer for many years, becoming president in the 1980s. She was awarded the John W. Coombs Memorial Award in recognition of high professional standards and commitment to the community by the United Way of Eastern Maine in 1996. She was a long-time volunteer at the Brewer Ecumenical Food Cupboard, president of the Eddington Plant and Pray Garden Club, and member and eventual president of the Eddington Historical Society. Gloria was a troop leader for the Girl Scouts of America, Abnaki Girl Scout Council, receiving the St. Anne’s medal from the Diocesan Girl Scout Troop. In her younger years, Gloria and Armand participated in family outings in the true Maine tradition; downhill and cross-country skiing, enjoying their camp at Sugarloaf Mountain, Carrabassett Valley; deer and bird hunting, camping, hiking and canoeing the Maine rivers; as well as enjoying their summer lake getaway on Branch Lake, Ellsworth. The family had many outdoor adventures that will always be cherished memories. She was a dedicated mother, supporting her children’s many activities, including dance recitals, music concerts, high school sports, gymnastics, the very first CANUSA track and field event, horseback riding and swimming competitions. Gloria’s personal hobbies included reading poetry, gardening, and bird watching; her table was often set with vegetables grown from her own garden and Armand and Gloria maintained several bird feeders about their property in Eddington. Her mother, father; one brother, Roland Frederick Jr.; and her first-born son, Richard, predeceased her. She will be sadly missed by her family, husband, Armand S. Andrle of Eddington; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Marie Andrle and their children, Katelyn, Christina and Eric of Clifton; six daughters, Kathleen Andrle and her fiance, Paul Gamache, of Nashua, N.H., Ellen Breindel and her husband, Tim and daughter, Elise Chasse, of Holden, Rosemary Corro and her husband, Lee and their children, Lindsay and Zachary, of Dedham, Jeanne Fuller and her husband, Chuck and their children, Samuel and Mary, of Boothbay, Louisa Hess, her husband, John and their children, Aurora and Andrea, of Brewer and Anne Marie Andrle of Buxton. Special thanks are extended to the caring staff of New Hope Hospice and especially to Lorraine Dusing, for her loving care of Gloria. Family and friends may visit 5-8 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Brewer. All are welcome to attend a reception after the Mass in the church center and interment will be after the reception at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
