BANGOR – Gordon Joseph Hawkes, 88, husband of Dorothy (Greenlaw) Hawkes, died peacefully, May 20, 2005, at home. He was born July 7, 1916, in Bangor, the son of James and Alice (Arsenault) Hawkes. Gordon attended Bangor schools, he was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the 331st Infantry Regiment at Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. Among his awards and citations is a Purple Heart. Gordon was employed for many years by Bangor Drug Company. He was a member of the VFW. In addition to his wife of 57 years, Dorothy; he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Michael Bassi of Lucerne; a son, William Hawkes of St. Albans; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 12 brothers and sisters. A private graveside service for family only will be held Saturday at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Arrangements by Foley Funeral Service.
