BOWDOINHAM – Gordon S. Tait, 97, of Preble Road, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at the Senior Health Facility in Brunswick after a short illness. He was born March 14, 1907, in Old Town, a son of Gordon W. and Sadie May McGlinchey Tait. He was educated in the Old Town schools and graduated for Old Town High School in 1925. He also attended many training and educational sessions relating to his electrical profession which he undertook while still in high school. He married Lillian G. Sawtelle in Bangor on July 24, 1927. Mr. Tait worked for several contractors from Bangor to Portland and specialized in electrical construction of hospitals around the state. He was associated with Dole Electrical Company of Bangor and in 1974 retired from the Campbell Electric Company of Hampden. Mr. Tait was one of the first persons in the state to hold a Master Electrician Certificate. He served as electrical inspector for the Town of Orono. He was past master of the Masonic Lodge and Anah Temple of Bangor, the Old Town Lodge of Elks, and the Maine State Horseman’s Association. Mr. Tait owned and raised standard bred horses for sulky racing, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was an avid reader and enjoyed meeting people for conversation. Mr. Tait was the oldest resident of Bowdoinham, received the gold cane from the town in 2001, and was the grand marshal of the Bowdoinham parade on Sept. 11, 2004. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years who passed away in 1995. He is survived by one daughter, Joane Tait of Woolwich; a son, Donald Tait of Hanover, Mass.; three grandchildren, Michael and Donald Tait Jr. of Hanover, Mass. and Scott Tait of Rockland; and five great-grandchildren. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath.
