NEWPORT – Grace Elizabeth (Braley) Lander, 95, was called home to be with her Lord Feb. 23, 2008, at Sebasticook Valley Health Care Facility, after a long period of ill health. She was born June 15, 1912, in Caribou, the daughter of Fred and Mae (Hume) Braley. Grace married Benjamin Lander in 1933 in Newport. He predeceased her Dec. 5, 1984. Grace was a member of Jubilee Family Worship Center, Newport. Her passion was her family. She enjoyed her trips to Connecticut to visit with her family there and she always enjoyed visits and being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Over the years, Grace was a caregiver to several people. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Lander; son, Albert Lander; grandson, Larry Dean Erskine; great-granddaughter, Kasey Lander; eight brothers, two sisters; and a special friend, Mark Brooks. Grace is survived by two children and their spouses, Janet and Richard Kaufman of Torrington, Conn., and Mahlon and Barbara Lander of Newport; daughter-in-law, Arlene Lander of Newport; grandchildren, Becky and Mark Grieco, Kirk and Charlene Erskine, Cindy and Michael Gabor, Tracy and Kenneth O’Connell, and Shari Erskine, all of Connecticut, Stuart and Deborah Lander, Amy and John May, Dianne and Marvin Preble, Wanda and Dana Blair, Norman and Kim Lander, all of Maine; great-grandchildren, Jason, Heather, Katelin, Shane, Josh, Chelsea, Cody, Cory, Chase, Bryant, Kenneth, Timothy, Megan, Justin, Ian, Marvin Jr., Spencer, Dawnese, Ricky, Ryan, Jon and Leigh; two sisters, Phyllis Bean and Eveleine Ludden, both of Newport; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be remembered by a special friend, Lillian Morrow. The family would like to give special thanks to Sebasticook Valley Health Care employees for their kindness and care of their mother and grandmother. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at Jubilee Family Worship Center, Elm Street, Newport, with the Revs. Carl Engstrom and Brian Woodbury officiating. Committal services will be conducted in the spring in the family lot at Riverside Cemetery, Newport.
