HAMPDEN – Grace Mae (Holmes) Morgan, 97, passed away peacefully Jan. 15, 2007, at a Bangor hospital. She was born May 23, 1909, in Old Town, the daughter of Winfield H. and Mary (Perkins) Holmes. Grace was a graduate of Old Town High School, Class of 1928. She was a member of the Hampden Congregational Church since 1957, a charter member and life member of the Whitcomb-Baker VFW Auxiliary No. 4633 of Hampden and a 75-year member and past matron of Star in the East OES No. 17 of Hampden and the Hampden Senior Citizens. Grace was a former employee of the Hampden Telephone Co., SAD No. 22 school lunch program, and enjoyed taking care of elderly people well into her senior years. Grace was a very loving and caring mother, stepmother, grandmother and a kind woman to all who knew her. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, played a mean game of cards, and was well known for her custard pies, which she made for church suppers and special people. Grace was predeceased by her husband, Mervin W. Morgan in 1974; a stepson, Harrison B. Morgan in 1974; a brother, Charles Holmes in 1985; a sister-in-law, Frances Holmes in 1986; a daughter-in-law, Loraine McGraw Morgan in 1988; and by a son-in-law, Donald E. Bowen in 2000. She is survived by a son, Melvin W. Morgan and his wife, Gladys Johnsen, of Keene, N.H.; a daughter, Frances Bowen of Hampden; a stepdaughter, Roberta Lane of Haines, Alaska; a stepdaughter-in-law, Mary Morgan of Concord, N.H.; six grandchildren, Thomas Morgan, Suzanne Washburn, Mark Bowen, Michael Bowen and wife, Sandra, Andrea Freedman and husband, Robert, and John Bowen; eight stepgrandchildren, Lindon Lane, Robert Lane and wife, Susan, Richard Lane and wife, Mary Lou, Carolyn Lane, Harrison Morgan Jr., Margo Ramsey, Stephen Morgan and wife, Valerie, and Jeannine McCoy and Cathy Barney who was like a granddaughter; several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 p.m. Friday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday conducted by the Rev. Dr. Deborah M. Jenks, pastor of the Hampden Congregational Church. After the service a continued time of remembrance and refreshments will be held at the VFW Hall, Canoe Club Road, Hampden. Interment in the springtime will be at Locust Grove Cemetery, Hampden.
