CARIBOU – Gwen Haley Harmon, 82, died Feb. 10, 2007, in Presque Isle. She was born July 6, 1924, in Woodland, the daughter of Leo Thomas and Margaret Mary (McGlinn) Haley. She was a graduate of Caribou High School, received her Bachelor of Science degrees from Aroostook State Teachers College and her Master of Education from the University of Maine – Orono. She was a teacher and elementary supervisor with the Caribou School Department for many years. Mrs. Harmon was a long time member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Fraternity, The American Association of University Women, The Writing Group, Caribou Day Extension, the Bridge Group and the Maine Association of Retired Teachers. She enjoyed reading, gardening, golf and cross country skiing. Gwen also loved to write, and she wrote and published a book entitled “This I Remember.” She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Ernest Chamberlain of Woodland; a brother, Burnham Haley of Los Altos, Calif.; four nieces, Anne Jepson, Patricia Wooten, Margaret Ison and Nora Haley Taam; six nephews, Steven, Timothy, Patrick, Brien, Daniel and Brent Haley; a special friend, Darlene Nelder of Presque Isle, several cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mrs. Harmon was predeceased by a sister, Leola Haley Kinne; and a nephew, Samuel Kinne. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Monday at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday Feb. 13, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at Old Holy Rosary Cemetery. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Mrs. Harmon may do so through the Caribou Public Library.
