NEWPORT – Gwendolyn N. Metcalf, 88, died April 27, 2006, at a Pittsfield hospital following a long illness. She was born Aug. 15, 1917, in Smyrna Mills, the daughter of Irving C. and Erna M. (Soule) McFarland. She attended Ricker Classical Institute in Houlton and was a graduate of Oakfield High School, Oakfield. She then attended the University of Maine in Orono and graduated from Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Mass. She married John William Metcalf Jr. June 30, 1938, in Oakfield. He predeceased her in 1988. She taught in the public schools of Oakfield, Brockton, Mass., and Easton, Mass. Before she returned to Maine, she resided in Massachusetts and Florida and for the past several years she had made her home in Newport. “Gwen,” as she was fondly known, was a member of the National Teachers Association and the Maine Teachers Association. She loved flowers and was a member of the St. Petersburg Florida Garden Club. She is survived by her son and his wife, John and Patricia Metcalf III of Bridgewater, Mass.; her daughter and husband, Thalia and Rodney Webb of Newport; four grandchildren, Lori, Lisa, Ivy and Rodney Jr.; six great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Cassie, Wansley, Astrid, Noah and Shelby; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A private family celebration of her life will be held in July.
