ELLSWORTH and FRANKLIN H. Dana Austin Jr., 73, died June 16, 2006, at a Bangor hospital after a long and courageous battle with diabetes. He was born March 1, 1933, in Ellsworth, the son of Harry Dana and Rita P. (Carter) Austin Sr. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. After the service, he attended University Maine at Orono and graduated from Husson College in 1961, with a bachelor of arts in business administration. Dana spent most of his employment in sales. He married Bethany “Betty” June 8, 1957, and they had 49 wonderful years together. They spent many summers at their retirement home on Donnell’s Pond with their family. Dana was an avid sports fan of the Ellsworth Eagles and enjoyed attending all the sporting events. He especially loved attending all of his grandchildren’s events. He was a member of the Lygonia Masonic Lodge No. 40 AF & AM of Ellsworth, Scottish Rite in Portland and Anah Temple Shrine in Bangor. He is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Harvard D. Austin and wife, Dodi, Peter G. Austin and wife, Teresa, both of Ellsworth; daughters, Susan A. Saunders and husband, Bryon, of Ellsworth, Rebecca A. Grant and husband, Bayley, of Centerville; grandchildren, Renee Worcester and husband, Michael, Rebecca A. Saunders, Amy E. Austin, Andrew T. Austin, Elizabeth M. Grant, Bethany P. Grant, Nichole L. Austin and Dana L. Austin; brother, William Austin and wife, Betty; sister, Louise Sealy and husband, George, both of Ellsworth. A Masonic service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, with a memorial service to follow at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth with Pastor Gerry Dill officiating.
