BANGOR – Harold J. Bubar, 86, died Tuesday June 26, 2007, at a Bangor nursing home. He was born Oct. 4, 1920, in Linneus, the son of John R. and Stella (Sharp) Bubar. He attended Byron Grade School, Linneus; Ricker Classical Institute, Houlton, graduating in 1938; and Colby College, Waterville, graduating in 1942. During his years at Ricker and Colby, he was active in various sports, winning letters in four varsity sports at Ricker and three at Colby. His senior year at Colby, he was named to the Boston Post All-Maine Football Team as an end. He was a dean’s list student and was active in various school sponsored non-athletic activities. During the summers of 1938 and 1939, he was a counselor, lifeguard, and swimming instructor at the state YMCA camp at Cobbosseecontee Lake, East Winthrop. On Aug. 14, 1942, he married the former Louise Hagan of New Limerick, who was also a graduate of Ricker and Colby. Harold served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1946, first as a weather instructor in the Technical Training Command at Chanute Field, Rantoul, Ill., and later as a staff member of a tropical weather school at the former Howard Air Base in the Canal Zone. After separation from the Air Corps, he taught and coached briefly at Fort Kent High School and the former Ricker Classical Institute and Junior College. He also served as director of Recreation and Parks, Houlton, for three years. He was employed by North Anson Reel Co. from 1951 to 1986, working in various administrative and executive capacities and was a vice president for 17 of the 35 years he worked for the company. From the mid 1950s to the mid 1960s, he actively coached in the North Anson Little League baseball program and coached a junior league baseball team. He regularly attended the Community United Methodist Church, North Anson, was a member of the church choir, as well as a choir soloist. He is survived by two sons, John H. Bubar and his wife, Kathy, of Durham, N.H., and James A. Bubar and his wife, Lisa, of Durham, N.H.; two grandsons, Joshua M. Bubar and his wife, Beth Cronin, of Waltham, Mass., and Seth Bubar of Bangor; a great-grandson, Duncan Bubar; a great-granddaughter, Allison Bubar; and a sister-in-law, Ruth A. Hagan of Durham, N.H. In addition to his wife, who predeceased him July 14, 1993; he was predeceased by four brothers, Clair R. Bubar, Philip E. Bubar, Harley M. Bubar, and Paul S. Bubar At the request of his family there will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at Community United Methodist Church, North Anson, with the Rev. George Hodgkins officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Cemetery, North Anson. Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison.
