HERMON – Harriet Jean Shirley, 71, died April 8, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Jan. 1, 1935, in Winterport, the daughter of Harold and Doris (Canty) Burrill. Harriet worked for a number of years for the Department of Human Services for the State of Maine. She was a former member of Eagle’s Club of Brewer and had served as president and chaplain. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, plastic canvas and was an avid NASCAR fan. Surviving are five children, Thomas Shirley and his wife, Melanie, of New York, Dana Shirley and his wife, Ruth, of Stetson, Bruce Shirley and his wife, Julie, of Washington State, Doris Shirley of Eddington, Peggy Rokes and her husband, Richard, of Bangor; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four sisters, Sandy Smith of Bangor, Patsy Siller of Massachusetts, Catherine Branscomb of Florida and Jackie Washburn of Connecticut; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Shawn and Rose Cox of Bangor and Delia McCabe of Hermon. Harriet was predeceased by her parents; a son, John; one sister, Marjorie; and brother, Carroll. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. Rex H. Garrett, director of chaplaincy services of EMMC officiating.
