HOULTON – In the company of her granddaughter, Shelley, Hazel S. Newman, 99, passed away peacefully Feb. 12, 2005, at the Madigan Nursing Home just 15 weeks shy of her 100th birthday. She was born May 27, 1905, in Littleton, the daughter of Frank and Susie (London) Stitham. Hazel was a resident of Houlton her whole life. She took great pleasure and pride knitting and crocheting for her family and friends and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She was a devoted member of the Military Street Baptist Church in Houlton. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd F. Newman, who passed away in 1972; and a daughter, Glenna A. White, who passed away in 1986; and a sister, Dorothy Stitham; and a brother, Ralph E. Stitham. She is survived by a daughter, Jeanne D. Grass and her husband, Wayne, of Raymond; and a sister, Maxine Williamson and her husband, Lloyd, of Houlton. She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She will be sorely missed as a mom, our nana and as a great friend. Hazel’s family would like to express their appreciation to the many nurses and the staff for the extraordinary care and comfort provided during this difficult time for her at the Madigan Nursing Home in Houlton. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at the Dunn Funeral Home in Houlton with the Rev. Randall Burns and the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Interment will be at the Littleton Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Hazel’s name may be made to The Military Street Baptist Church, care of Dunn Funeral Home.
