BANGOR and LINCOLN Helen (Hackett) Weatherbee passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008, surrounded by the people she loved, at a local health care center, after a long illness. Helen was born in Bangor, daughter of William D. and Ethel M. (Towle) Hackett. She was a graduate of John Bapst High School, Bangor; St. Mary’s School of Nursing, Lewiston; as well as Simmons College School of Nursing, Boston. Helen worked for many years devoted to the practice of nursing, first as a nurse at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, and then as a registered public health nurse for the state of Maine. The Maine Department of Human Services awarded her the Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her 43 years of service to the people of Maine. During this time she made a lasting and loving impression on a great number of patients for her compassion, dedication and humor. Helen was actively involved in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lincoln, and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. In her retirement years she enjoyed traveling and spending time with her friends and family at her home in Lincoln and her camp on Cold Stream Pond, Enfield. She loved spending time with her family, especially taking frequent shopping trips to Bangor with her grandchildren and she never missed a sporting or academic event that involved her family. Helen was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Clarence L. Weatherbee of Lincoln. She is survived by her daughter, Peggy McPike and her husband, Alden, of Bangor; a son, Michael Weatherbee and his wife, Janet (Snow) Weatherbee, of McLean, Va.; four grandchildren, Noah McPike of Nashville, Tenn., Michael McPike of Bangor, Mary Kathleen Weatherbee and Amy Elizabeth Weatherbee, both of McLean, Va.; and two sisters, Eileen Foley of Lakeland, Fla., and June Smith of Winterport. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4-6 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, at St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor, with the Rev. Timothy Nadeau, St. John’s Catholic Church, celebrant.
