MILLINOCKET – Herbert J. Tinkham, 81, passed away Oct. 25, 2005, at a Howland healthcare facility, after a brief illness. A long time Millinocket resident, he was born Oct. 26, 1923, in Passadumkeag, the son of Frederick and Ida (Mason) Tinkham. From 1943-1946, Herb served in the U.S. Army in Europe under General George S. Patton and fought at the invasion of Normandy Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. A proud veteran, he was a member of the VFW Post 4154 in Millinocket. In 1951, he married Alexine Landry and they had two children, Paul and Angela. He went to work at Great Northern Paper Company, retiring in 1986 after more than 30 years. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing at camp in Passadumkeag. He enjoyed visiting with family at Eddie and June’s camp at Ambejujus Lake, traveling to Florida, and visiting with friends over coffee at McDonald’s in Millinocket. He is survived by his children, Paul and his wife, Robin Tinkham, of Jacksonville, Fla. and Angela and her husband, Robert Mitchell, of Levant. He is also survived by several cousins and nieces, and their families. Herb was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Alexine, in 2004. In addition, he was predeceased by his brother, Leo Tinkham; his sisters, Effie Tinkham and Harriett Simond; and nieces, Janice Winter and Shirley Simond. Per Herb’s wishes, there will be no visiting hours. A Graveside Service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at Millinocket Cemetery.
