STOCKHOLM – Howard Hilding Hede, 82, died unexpectedly, Dec. 5, 2006. He was born Sept. 10, 1924, in Stockholm, the third of 12 children born to Elliot and Hilma (Nelson) Hede. After two years of high school in Stockholm, Howard enlisted in the U.S. Army along with his good friend, Donald Nickerson March 1943 and served in Europe until December 1945. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. After the war, Howard worked as a refrigeration engineer. He completed two years of high school in one year, graduating with his younger sister, Janet. Howard then attended the University of Maine – Orono, from 1949 to 1953, obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering. Howard worked for many years in Alaska, both for the Army Corp of Engineers and the Federal Aviation Agency. He married Ruth Quillian and adopted her daughter, Greta. Back in Maine, he worked for the Northern Maine Development Corp. Since his retirement, Howard had been very active in the Veterans’ for Peace organization and also Peace and Justice. He was one of many who demonstrated against the war in Iraq and many saw him at the bridge in Presque Isle, rain or shine. Howard has had many letters to the editor printed in the Aroostook Re-publican, the Bangor Daily News and the Portland Press Herald. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth; his parents, brothers, Nelson, Richard, Daniel and Keith; and a sister, Bertha Rasmussen. He is survived by his daughter, Greta King; brother, John and sister-in-law, Rosemary; brother, Harold and sister-in-law, Andrea; sister, Janet and brother-in-law, Dale Sandstrom; and sisters, Gladys Merritt, Kathleen Mc-Cormick and Patricia Mishou; as well as many nephews, nieces and friends. In keeping with Howard’s wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral. A private interment will be held in summer 2007.
