ENFIELD – God took him home while surrounded by his wife and children, July 28, 2005, at a Bangor hospital. Although it was sudden, Hugh Lord lived 75 fulfilling years. He was born Jan. 26, 1930, in Old Town, the son of Herbert and Helen (Campbell) Lord. As a child, he grew up in Ellsworth and West Enfield. He graduated from Lee Academy in 1947 and received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Maine June 17, 1951, the same day he married his wife, Winona Springer. His career has spanned five professions. He was a “teacher of writing” and English at Lee Academy, Penobscot Valley High School, and Eastern Maine Community College. He began sports writing with the Bangor Daily News in 1956, and joined the Portland Sunday Telegram staff in June of 1971,where he was awarded Sports Writer of the Year in 1972. After three years of being a writer for Bangor Daily News he joined Bowdoin College as an administrative assistant in public relations. He also served as assistant director of the News Bureau at Cornell University, public relations officer at Brown University, and director of public relations at Holy Cross College. In addition to his sports writing and teaching duties he was president of the Northern Penobscot School Masters Club, president of the Enfield Housing Cooperation, a member of the Enfield planning board, a member of the board of directors of the Cold Stream Camp Owner’s Association, and he had poetry published in the New York Sunday Times, The Muse, and The Husson Review. Before retiring from Eastern Maine Community College in 1991, he published The Competent Writer, a textbook written for writing classes at EMCC. His love for golf was almost as great as it was for his family. He enjoyed spending time at his Enfield home writing, painting, doing crossword puzzles, feeding his birds and squirrels, and spending time on his computer. As an amateur photographer, he took many candid pictures of his favorite subjects, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Noni; son, Vance Lord of Enfield; daughter, Valerie Lord Nicholson and significant other, David Poulin, of West Enfield; sister, Carmen Lord Ball of San Diego, Calif.; two granddaughters, Jennifer Sage Cassio and husband, Shane, and Alyssa Nicholson, all of West Enfield; grandson, Wyatt Lord, of Lincoln; two great-grandchildren, Lacey and Jason Cassio; many brothers and sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family and friends. His parents, a grandson, Jason Sage; and a son-in-law, Scott Nicholson, predeceased him. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2005, at the Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Bruce Young officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hugh C.
