BLUE HILL – Jacquelyn Garwood Brownlow, 75, died peacefully in the night Nov. 28, 2006, surrounded by her loving family at her home. She was born Aug. 6, 1931, in East Liverpool, Ohio, the first daughter of Sarah (Huston) and James F. Garwood. Although she lived in Cooperstown, N.Y.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Beaufort, S.C., she considered Blue Hill her home. She graduated from East Liverpool High School and East Liverpool City Hospital as a registered nurse, 1952. She worked as a polio nurse in Cleveland, where she met her husband, Bradley Brownlow, who was a medical student at that time. They were married for 40 years. After moving to Blue Hill, 1959, she worked as a registered nurse at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and with her husband in his medical practice. She volunteered with Four Town Nursing Service and took an active role in development of a hospice program, when this was still a new concept in Blue Hill. She took voice lessons, gave recitals and participated in many community musical events. An active member of the First Congregational Church of Blue Hill for 48 years, she was choir director for 20 of those. Her greatest joy was to sing, play and listen to music. Jackie was devoted to the Bagaduce Chorale for 28 years. She combined her love of music and desire to share that music by volunteering as a sheet music conservator for the Bagaduce Music Lending Library. Jackie loved her family and friends enormously; she enjoyed playing word and card games, especially her monthly bridge. She was an avid reader, excellent cook and an enthusiastic traveler. Above all, she opened her heart and home to everyone who came into her life. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Bradley Brownlow; one brother, John Garwood; two nephews, Jim Brownlow and Roger Brownlow. She is survived by three daughters, Melissa Brownlow and husband, Peter Baker, of South Granville, Prince Edward Island, Mary Brownlow and husband, Norman Smith, of Wellington, New Zealand and Gale Brownlow Flax and husband, George, of Norfolk, Va.; one son, Weston Brownlow and special friend, Cindy Gawley, of Blue Hill; two sisters, Jane Young-Allen and husband, Kermit Allen and Mary Ann Kish and husband, Steve, of Blue Hill; one brother, Joe Garwood and wife, Arlene, of Holliston, Mass.; six grandchildren, William, Edwin and Nathaniel Baker, Beck and Isla Rose Brownlow and their mother, Laurie Stowe and Susannah Smith; special nieces and nephews, Amy Woodard, Sarah Karam, Caroline Young, Christopher Young, Sarah Kish Capps and Steven Kish, Claire Garwood Burns, Kimberly Garwood Fernon, Elizabeth, Ann, Judy, Mary Brownlow Huessy, Ken Brownlow and Mark Brownlow; her beloved cats and countless cherished friends. The family wishes to thank all those who kept her in their thoughts and provided care and comfort during the past four months. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at the First Congregational Church of Blue Hill with the Rev. Rob McCall, pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send memorial gifts to Bagaduce Music Lending Library, P.O. Box 829, Blue Hill, ME 04614; First Congregational Church of Blue Hill, P.O. Box 444, Blue Hill, ME 04614; or Hancock County Homecare and Hospice, P.O. Box 156, Blue Hill, ME 04614.
