WHITING – James Allan Green, 87, passed away Feb. 4, 2005, in Machias, after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Whiting, the son of the late Arthur and Mary E. (Moores) Green. James attended school at Whiting Village and Washington Academy. He will be forever remembered for his love of antiquing, junking, and his skill of dickering. After high school, James was deployed overseas in the Army Airborne 33rd Air Depot Group during World War II. Overseas, the men of the 33rd Airborne kept the C-47s, Skytrains and gliders of the Airborne Pathfinder repaired and serviced during the invasion battles of Germany. After the initial landing stepped up their rate readying the planes for resupply that kept airborne troops advancing. In February, the group flew to Chartres, France and reorganized the entire depot in eight days, thereby winning an official commendation. At the present time, however, their Airborne patch still is displayed prominently in GI mess halls and barracks. For his service during World War II, James received the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Silver Star. He is survived by two daughters, Pam Blanchard of Machias, and Sharon Green of Houlton; granddaughter, Kimberly (Gardner) Wall and husband, Robert, of Richmond; grandson, Allan James Blanchard of Machias; great-granddaughter, Carlene Marie Colson of Calais; companion, Joan Jasper of Whiting; two sisters, Ruth Shaw of New York and Beryl Gardner of Whiting; and many nieces and nephews. James was predeceased by a son, Victor Green; three sisters, Julia (Green) Wheeler, Barbara (Green) Clark, and Mary (Green) Knight; and three brothers, Robert Green, Ray Green, and Francis Green. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at the Whiting Town Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086-1240.
