SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – James C. “Zugie” Zugelder, 79, formerly of Wytopitlock, died 7:35 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2008, at his residence. He was born Dec. 27, 1928, in Springfield, Ohio, the son of John C. and Mary M. (Hornberger) Zugelder. He had been employed as a firefighter for the Springfield Fire Division for 22 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of St. Bernard Church and was a U.S. Army veteran, having achieved the rank of master sergeant in six years and was a Korean War veteran. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Norma J. (Cooke); five children and spouses, Karl and Carol Zugelder of Maine, Mary Jane Lower, William John Zugelder, Richard L. Zugelder, all of Springfield, Ohio, and Linda and Scott Meek of New Carlisle, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Val and husband, Joe McMahan, Steve Lower, Julie Lower, Tabitha Lower, James D. Zugelder and wife, Ashley, Mike Zugelder, Chase and Denver Meek; six great-grandchild-ren, J.D. and Chris McMahan, Haley Lower, Nihkya Stultz, Cameron and Aiden Zugelder; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John “Jack” and Freda Zugelder, and William and Dorothy Zugelder, all of Springfield, Ohio; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five sisters, Ruth Zugelder, Betty Pavelka, Pat Conklin, Mary Ellen Deady and Edna Ware; and his good friend and fishing companion, Gene Murnhan. The family wants to offer a special thanks to Dr. Singh and his staff for the wonderful care and support Jim received during his illness and also Community Mercy Hospice. Family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at Conroy Funeral Home. A memorial Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Bernard Church. Burial will be in Maine. Memorial donations may be made to Springfield Paramedic Fund.
