BANGOR – James E. Halkett, 84, died May 1, 2008, at a local hospital. He was born Nov. 25, 1924, in Bridg-ton, son of Thomas E. and Kathleen (Brackett) Halkett. Jim was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving as a gunner and flew 60 missions in the European Theatre. He was a well-known and respected insurance agent with New England Life for 44 years. Jim was a former member of Bangor School Board, Maine State Board of Education, Bangor Planning Board, Bangor Rotary Club and Advisory Board of Casco Northern Bank. He was a past president of the former James A. Taylor Hospital, Bangor; Penobscot Valley Health Association, the University of Maine Foundation, Eastern Maine Life Underwriters, State of Maine Life Underwriters. Jim was an incorporator of Eastern Maine Med-ical Center, recipient of the Jay Putman Stevens award, life member of the Million Dollar Roundtable, board member of the overseers of the Lucerne Village Corporation, member of the criminal justice committee state of Maine, a member of the feasibility study for the Lincoln Dickey project and a member of the former Tarratine Club, City Club and Bangor Jaycees. He was a member of All Souls Congregational Church, served on the board of trustees, executive board, moderator and was active in fund raising. He was also an associate member of Valley Presbyterian Church, Green Valley, Ariz., and member of Elks Club, Green Valley, Ariz. Active masonically, Jim was a member of Oriental Lodge No. 13 AF & AM, Oriental Chapter No. 30 R.A.M. and Oriental Commandery No. 22 Knight Temple, all of Bridgton, Bangor Council No. 5, member and past potentate of Anah Shriners, former member of Anah Shrine Arab Patrol and Anah Shrine Highlanders, past director Royal Order of Jesters, past president of Cabri Chapter No. 139 and an Emeritus Representative to Imperial Council of the Shrine of North America. Surviving are his wife, Geraldine “Geri” (True) Halkett of Bangor; two children, Thomas R. Halkett and his wife, Diane, of Marshfield and Sandy T. Halkett of Winslow; five grandchildren, Stewart B. McCluer and his wife, Lane, of Oxford, Miss., Jesse I. Halkett of Castine, Rowland C. Halkett of New York City, Ezra S. Halkett of Mount Desert and Mariah P. Halkett of Putney, Vt.; one step-granddaughter, Lucia Helder of Marshfield; and two great-granddaughters, Lilly and Margaret. He was predeceased by a brother, Russell H. Halkett. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, and the Rev. Renee U. Garrett, M. Div., Minister of Christian Nurture, officiating.
