BANGOR – James E. Scanlon, 73, dedicated and devoted husband of Ce-cile E. (Couture) Scanlon, died Oct. 14, 2007, at a Bangor health care center, after a long battle with cancer. He was born April 13, 1934, in Bangor, the son of Clair and Norma (DeGrass) Scanlon. James graduated from Sherman High School and served two years in the Army stationed in Fort Lewis, Wash., and spent much of his time in Alaska, training for cold wea-ther rescue. He retired from Carpenters-Millwright Local No. 1996, Augusta and had taught welding part-time at Eastern Maine Technical College. James was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, Bangor and was a member of Pine Cone Council No. 114, Knights of Columbus and Fourth Degree Assembly. A great storyteller, James also had the ability to fix anything and became the handyman for his neighbors. Surviving in addition to his wife of Bangor, are three children, Penny Jo Perkins of Hillsborough, N.C., Michael Scanlon of Stonington and Timothy A. Scanlon and his wife, Jennifer, of Glenburn; three grandchildren, Tyler and Tanya Scanlon and Elizabeth Perkins; one sister, Louise Morgan of Greene; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; an infant daughter, Cheryl Ann; and a sister, Teresa Cossaboom. He will be remembered by friends of Bill W. and Ann W., of which he was a member for 24 years. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bangor, with the Rev. Thomas Lequin, pastor, celebrant. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. Family and friends are invited to the parish center immediately afterward for a time of continued fellowship.
