PRESQUE ISLE – James R. Day Jr., 73, died Tuesday morning, March 21, 2006, at a hospital in Alexandria, Va. He was born April 27, 1932, at Presque Isle, the son of James R. and Mary (Tilley) Day. Mr. Day served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, the Silver Star and the Legion of Merit. He was a life member and past commander of the VFW Post 2599, DAV, The Purple Hearts and the American Legion Post 88 in Presque Isle. Jim was very active, always volunteering and helping people any way he could. He participated at military committals in the area and co-chairman of the Veterans Cemetery in Caribou. Jim and Lila had been married 49 years as of March 15. He worked as a truck driver for many years for McCains Foods, International Paper, Trombley Cement and Milliken-Tomlinson. He is survived by his wife, Lila (Little) Day of Presque Isle; a son, Andrew J. Day of Presque Isle; four daughters and their husbands, Noreen and Walter Durost of Skowhegan, Rebecca and Edward Curtis of Fort Fairfield, Linda and Joseph Otis of Stafford, Va., and Carla and Harry Buzzell of Somersworth, N.H.; four brothers, Ralph of Chester, Thomas Day of Fayetteville, N.C., Stephen and Dale Day, both of Presque Isle; three sisters, Bertha Weaver and Viola Weaver, both of Presque Isle and Edna Murray of Bangor; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one brother, Preston Day Sr. Relatives and friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, where the VFW and the American Legion will hold a ceremony at 6:45 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with Pastor Doug Taubin officiating. A gathering will be held at the VFW Hall, Parsons Street, Presque Isle, immediately after the service. Spring interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery.
