WINTERPORT and BANGOR James R. Smith, 83, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at a Bangor nursing facility. He was born Aug. 7, 1924, in Old Town, the son of Philip J. and Rose L. (Hurd) Smith. James was raised and attended schools in Winterport. He began his working career in the construction field and moved on as a hand sewer in various Bangor area shoe factories. He served in the U.S Navy in Newport R.I., and later retired from the State of Maine, as an electrician’s assistant. James was a member of the Eagles Club, Brewer, where he enjoyed playing cards, pool and dancing. His children and grandchildren were considered the highlight of his life. James loved to tinker and enjoyed gardening as he was a well-rounded Jack of all trades. He is survived by two daughters, Rochelle A. Webb and her husband, Mark, of Winterport, and Estelle J. Farris and her husband, James, of Cumberland; three grandchildren, Curtis and Amanda Webb of Winterport, and Ian Farris of Cumberland. A special thanks to a niece, Kathy, who frequently visited James. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Alfred; and a sister, Charlotte. Friends may call 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Bald Hill Cove Cemetery, Winterport.
