CARIBOU – Jean M. Turner, 86, died Jan. 16, 2008, in Caribou. She was born Oct. 9, 1921, in Charleston, N.H., the daughter of Louis and Julia (Rich) Morse. She was a 1939 graduate of Bangor High School and received her Bachelor of Arts in nursing from the University of Maine at Orono, where she was a member of the Glee Club. She married Philip Turner in 1944, and she and Phil lived in numerous areas of the country while he served with the U.S. Army. They returned to Orono and she continued her nursing career while Philip finished his studies at Orono. Jean taught nursing and worked at the university health center at Amherst College. While Philip attended Michigan State, she continued to teach in Lansing and was also a nurse in Battle Creek. Jean moved to Caribou in 1960, where she was employed as a registered nurse at local nursing homes and lastly at Fort Fairfield Hospital. She was a member of Gray Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime member of the church choir, a member of the United Methodist Women’s Group and served as a lay leader. An avid reader, Jean read more than 800 library books plus many others while she and Phil traveled in their motor home. She was a past board member of Caribou Public Library. After retirement, she loved traveling with Phil in the motor home as well as trips to Alaska, England, Scotland and Whales. She is survived by her husband of Caribou, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Turner was predeceased by her sons, Peter B., J. Scott and Alex. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at Gray Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anna Beach officiating, assisted by Rev. Lynne Josslyn. After the service, the family invites everyone to visit with them for a time of fellowship and refreshments in the church dining room. Interment will be at South Side Cemetery, Mapleton.
