MATTAPOISETT, Mass. – James W. Harris, 84, died Dec. 21, 2005, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Dorothy H. (Brown) Harris. He was born in Bangor, the son of the late William J. and Edna (Weld) Harris. Mr. Harris moved to Mattapoisett, Mass. in 1951, and was a member of the Mattapoisett Congregational Church. He was formerly employed by the Acushnet Company for many years until his retirement. Mr. Harris was a member of the Maconchu Club, the Mattapoisett Historical Society, the Mattapoisett Land Trust, the University of Maine Alumni Association, lifetime member of the Star in the East Lodge No. 60 AF & AM and a National Master in the American Contract Bridge League. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the recipient of the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with four bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with one star, World War II Victory Medal, American Area Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Survivors include a daughter, Jane B. Harris of Mattapoisett; two sons, William C. Harris, and his wife, Monica, of Onemo, Va. and Mark T. Harris of Randolph, Mass.; a brother, Deane Harris of Bradley; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home For Funerals, 50 County Rd., Rt. 6, Mattapoisett, Mass.
