HOLDEN – Jane Leland, 88, passed away Oct. 21, 2006, in the company of her family at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. She was born July 16, 1918, in Pelham Manor, N.Y., the daughter of Don C. and Janet (Young) Wheaton. Jane was a graduate of Westover School for Girls, Middlebury, Conn., and Bradford College. She was a member of the first class of Westchester County Red Cross Nurses Aid Program. Jane was proud of serving in the military, WAAC, in the air transport command and was squadron commander in the Air Force. As a military wife for 20 years, she traveled to many places and retired to Bangor in 1961. Jane worked for United Cerebral Palsy for 15 years, first as an aide and after obtaining teacher certification, as a teacher. She was director of Camp Capella for five years and it was Jane who gave the camp its name. Capella, being the “brightest star” in the constellation Auriga. Jane also worked with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years. Jane married Gordon Leland in 1968 and they later retired to Holden. She is survived by two sons, Carl H. Sanborn and wife, Jane, of Bangor and Don W. Sanborn and wife, Dorothy, of Fulton, Md.; a daughter, J. Chris Nelson of Festus, Mo.; stepdaughter, Carole L. O’Toole and husband, Frank, of Mc-Lean, Va.; stepson, Richard Leland; three grandchildren, Anissa Malague, Jessica Salfi and Scott Nelson; two stepgranddaughters, Dr. Kathleen O’Toole and Kirra O’Toole; four great-grandchildren, Jack, Lily, Eddie and Molly; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Wheaton of Columbus, N.C., and Juanita Ryan of Glenburn; brother-in-law, Roland Leland of Glenburn; special friends, Linda Williams of Clifton, the Hammond’s and Mel Leavitt of Holden. Jane was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; and a brother, Don. A service of remembrance will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Dana Douglas, pastor of the Holden Congregational Church, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., after the service.
