FORT KENT – Jane S. (Chase) King, 79, passed away Nov. 12, 2003, at Forest Hill Manor, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born April 17, 1924, in Nashua, N.H., the daughter of George and Berthe (Dufault) Sylvester. Jane graduated from St. Mary’s Girl School in New Hampshire and majored in journalism at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. She resided on Martha’s Vineyard before moving her family to central Massachusetts. She was employed in various fields in real estate, newspaper advertising, management, and customer service. Jane moved to northern New Mexico, residing in Taos for the last 20 years, and leaves behind many dear friends. She worked in fine gift shops and galleries until moving to Fort Kent a year ago. Jane was an avid horsewoman and lover of nature, instilling in her children knowledge and respect for all creatures. She wrote children’s stories and reading was a favorite hobby. She was a passionate gardener and cook and became an accomplished weaver of original wall hangings, exhibited and sold in Taos. She is survived by a son, Edward Chase, his wife, Maryann, of Wendell, Mass.; a daughter, Jo A. King, her husband, Paul Smith, of Sinclair; three special grandchildren, Bethany Maselli and her husband, Chris, Matthew Chase and his wife, Tracy, Joshua Chase and his wife, Sarah; five special great-grandchildren, Emily and Adam Maselli, Victoria, Kaitlynn, Maggie Chase, all of Massachusetts. She was predeceased by a brother, Russell L. Sylvester. Jane had expressed and her family emphasizes their grateful appreciation to her doctor and the compassionate, loving care received from the staff at Forest Hill Manor during her stay. At Jane’s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Battered Women’s Project, P.O.
