JANET D. CALLNAN

HOULTON – Janet D. Callnan, 73, passed away Dec. 17, 2007, surrounded by her family at her home. She was born May 11, 1934, at the Cole Farm Dairy, Dayton, the daughter of Geo-rge B. and Alice M. (Cole) Dow. Janet moved to Oakfield in 1947, when her father became employed as yardmaster for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. Graduating as valedictorian from Oakfield Community High School, she enjoyed softball and girls’ basketball, playing center forward. With her height and sureness, she was high scorer of every game, setting a record of 48 points in one game. She went on to attend nursing school at Eastern Maine Medical Center, where she met and married Robert Callnan, with whom she shared 55 years of love and companionship. They were always together no matter what they did. Janet’s true love was camping, hunting, fishing, snowsledding and her many dogs. She and Bob were frequent guests at the Foster’s on Mattagammon Lake and the Nugent’s camps on Chamberlain Lake. Scotty’s flying service flew them in a floatplane into many remote areas, such as Round Pond, where Janet tagged her first moose. Her favorite remote fishing pond was Nesowadnehunk. Her competitive snowsledding earned her several trophies. Summers were spent at the family camps on Nickerson and East Grand lakes. Nickerson Lake was about swimming, water skiing and Sunday barbeques, where East Grand was sailing and countless hours of successful salmon fishing in the “Janet” boat. They enjoyed many fun and adventurous experiences, which also included wintering in Florida for the last 25 years. Janet is survived by her husband, Robert; her sons, Douglas and Robert “Bert”; her daughters, Kathryn and Maureen Callnan, Nancy Kuliga and Mary Beth Fitzpatrick and their spouses; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; her sister, Joyce “Tess” Taylor; her brother, Malcolm Dow; many cherished friends; and her very faithful and loving companion, her pug, Daisy. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Aimee Fitzpatrick; and her brother, Marvin Dow. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Dunn Funeral Home. A service of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Mary of the Visitation Church with Deacon Al Burleigh officiating.
