SEARSPORT – Janice Elaine Whalen, born Janice Elaine Sutherland, May 22, 1932, passed away Sept. 28, 2005, at the home of her daughter in Orrington. Janice lost a courageous three month battle with cancer. She was one of 10 children born to Vern and Irene (Oliver) Sutherland. She was predeceased by her husband of many years, Earle A. Whalen in 1995; a brother, John Sutherland; and her sister, Verna Mann. She is survived by two sons and a daughter, Shaun and Donna Whalen of Milwaukee, Ore., Kevin and Debbie Whalen of Searsport, and Kellie and Walter Hickson of Orrington; seven grandchildren, Chelsea Hickson, Caitlin and Colin Whalen, Michael Whalen, Dustin and David Olson, and Randi and husband, Chris Morse; four great-grandchildren, Madisyn, Maggie and Macey Morse, and Alice Whalen. She leaves behind her special canine friend, Kallie the wonder dog. She is also survived by four brothers and three sisters, Lloyd, Walter, Glen and Richard Sutherland, Norma Smith, Barbara Sutherland and Hope Ahonan; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Janice leaves behind her valued friend, Judy Buck. Janice retired as a bookkeeper for the Penobscot Marine Museum in 1998. She also worked for Merrill Transport and as head teller at the Heritage Bank in Searsport as well as the bookkeeper for Stinson Canning in Belfast. She enjoyed golf, reading, dancing and her children, and grandchildren. Services will be graveside 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 980 Turner St., Auburn. By her request, there will be no visiting hours.
