JANNETTA JENNINGS SHAW BELFAST – Jannetta Jennings Shaw, beloved wife of the late Lt. Col. Frank Hazeltine Shaw, passed away Aug. 6, 2008, surrounded by her loving family at her residence. Janey was born in Belfast in 1922, the daughter of Jannetta Rogers Jennings and George Henry Jennings. She married her longtime sweetheart, Frank Shaw, Oct. 9, 1943, in Olympia, Wash., and from there began her life as the proud wife of a military officer. She worked as a Japanese code breaker for the Army Signal Corps, during Frank’s two-year deployment during World War II. She was proud to make Belfast her home, although she traveled to and lived in numerous cities both in the U.S. and abroad with her husband while he was a member of the U.S. Army. A graduate of Crosby High School, Belfast, and Forsyth Dental School, Boston, Janey practiced dental hygiene in the Belfast area before her retirement. She was a proud citizen and dedicated member of the community, volunteering countless hours for organizations such as Meals on Wheels and First Church Wreath Committee. She was a generous and caring person who will be deeply missed by many. An avid painter and artist, Janey was a proud member of the Mid-Coast Art Guild. She shared her love of art with all who met her, as well as her enthusiasm for teddy bear making, cookie baking and gardening. She loved all things related to the ocean, including sailing and her infamous Memorial Day dips in the bay, and passed along this appreciation for nature and the ocean to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Above all, Janey was a dedicated and loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She is survived by her brother, Richard K. Jennings of Fayette; children, Anne Shaw of Belfast, Eben Shaw and wife, Betsy, of Appleton and Jane Shaw of Manchester, N.H.; six grandchildren, Jessica Woods and husband, Blade, of Waldo, Jebb Shaw and Jannetta Shaw of Appleton, Mike Pond, Sterling Pond and Brashua Gero and fiancee, Stephanie Jackson, all of Manchester, N.H.; four great-grandchildren, Maggie and Jack Pond of Manchester, N.H., and Levi and Grace Woods of Waldo. She was predeceased by her parents; older brother, George Henry Jennings II; and her husband. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at First Church, Belfast. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to Hospice of Waldo County, 114 Northport Ave., Belfast, ME 04915. Arrangements are under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
