ALBION – Jeanne Littlefield Hammond, died in peace Nov. 19, 2006, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jeanne was born Aug. 26, 1927, in Dexter, one of two children of Fred Littlefield and Wilhelmina Hauser Littlefield. After graduating as valedictorian from Newport High School, Jeanne continued her education at Colby College, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English in 1949. While attending Colby, Jeanne worked at City Job Print, where she met her future husband, Earle M. Hammond. In early 1951, she and Earle married and started their family of seven children. In 1997, Jeanne unexpectedly lost her husband of 46 years. In 1961, Jeanne was hired as the executive secretary, then later as registrar of the Lancaster Course in Ophthalmology, which is held at Colby College each summer. She had been the requisite figurehead for this course throughout the past 45 years, and the course will not be the same without her warmth, motherly approach and valued intelligence. In 1962, Jeanne began her employment at Colby as a secretary for the Registrar’s Office. During her 35-year tenure at the Registrar’s Office, Jeanne touched the lives of thousands of students and hundreds of faculty members. Throughout her career, Jeanne worked tirelessly for the equality of women. In 1955, she joined an organization to which her mother belonged, the Waterville Business and Professional Women, B.P.W. She held every local B.P.W. office, sat on most committees and served as state president. She was honored for 50 years of service to B.P.W. November 2004. She was honored for her volunteerism by Waterville B.P.W. November 2005 at the REM Community Awards Cere-mony. Jeanne spent many years as a trustee and was currently serving as president of B.P.W.’s Futurama Foundation, which provides educational scholarships for Maine women. Jeanne also joined the American Association of University Women, A.A.U.W. She held most local offices and served as state president. She received A.A.U.W.’s Achievement Citation Award, 2000. Her community involvement also included REM, The Red Hat Society, Albion Historical Society, American Legion Auxiliary, Maine Women’s Lobby, and Colby Alumni Association.
