ORONO and FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Jeanne Margaret Smaha, 84, died Aug. 18, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Nov. 24, 1921, in Malone, N.Y., daughter of Alfred and Mabel (Murphy) Brooks. Jeane was a graduate of Malone Academy, New Rochelle College and St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1944. She joined the U.S. Army nursing corps. and was assigned to the 121st general hospital European theater of operations. She served as a private nurse to Gen. Harry Vaughn. During her service in the U.S. Army, she met and married her beloved husband, Albert H. Smaha. After her service, she extended her care giving duties as a nurse for 60 years, including 35 years of service to St. Joseph Hospital, Bangor, in a supervisory capacity and incorporated in the founding of the industrial and commercial medical assessment program for many of the regional mills and industries. Jeanne was active with the Oblate Retreat House of Augusta, the Indian Island Healthcare Program and was known to dress up as Santa Claus for many of the local area children patients and the elderly. She will be remembered by all who knew her for her kindness and loving smile in their time of need. Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Albert H. Smaha of Orono; four children, Robert “Skip” Smaha and Dawn of Londonderry, N.H., Sandra S. Conaboy of Warwick, R.I., Kathryn S. Bessey and her husband, Paul, of Orono, Gregory B. Smaha and his wife, Evelyn, of Old Town; 22 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, Paul; and sister, Rita. A Memorial Mass celebrating Jeanne’s life will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Orono, with the Rev. Rudolph Leveille celebrant. All are invited to a brunch 11 a.m.-1 p.m. immediately after the Mass at the Black Bear Inn. Those who wish to remember Jeanne in a special way may make contributions in her memory to the Jeanne M.
