HANCOCK – Jennie M. Gray, 85, wife of the late Clyde L. Gray, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born Aug. 12, 1918, in Deblois, the daughter of Wilber I. and Annie G. (French) Merritt. Jennie was a graduate of the Washington State Normal School, where she earned her teaching degree, and the University of Maine, where she earned a Master Degree in Education. Jennie taught school in Plantation 21, Alexander, Calais, Columbia Falls, Milbridge and Ellsworth. She was a substitute teacher in Ellsworth through the school year of 2003. Jennie was very active in local granges, and was past master of the Schoodic Grange in Franklin. She was a member of the United Baptist Church in Ellsworth, V.F.W. Post No. 109 Ladies Auxiliary in Ellsworth, the Maine Education Association, the National Education Association, the National Retired Teachers Association, the Hancock County Retired Teachers Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Jennie is survived by four sons, Dick Gray and his wife, Dee, of Ellsworth, Bob Gray and his wife, Harriet, of Florida, Jack Gray and his wife, Doreen, of Ellsworth, and Randy Gray and his wife, Joanne, of Brewer; a daughter-in-law, Jean Estes of North Windham; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Ronald Gray; and three brothers, Wilber, Charles, and Clyde Merritt. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Friday, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Baptist Church, corner of Hancock and Pine streets in Ellsworth, with the Rev. Dr. Branan Becknell, pastor, and Bob Maddocks officiating.
