BELFAST – Joan Ellen (Weed) Stewart, died at a Belfast hospital, Sept. 15, 2004, after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 28, 1926, in Bangor, the daughter of Marjorie L. (Seavey) and George E. Weed, Sr. Joan graduated from Bangor High School in 1944. Upon graduation she enrolled in nurses’ training at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast and became a registered nurse. In 1951 she married George Stewart and continued her nursing career at Waldo County General Hospital where she worked for 43 years. She and her husband enjoyed taking bus tours and spending time at their camper at Searsport Shores. After widowhood and retirement she became an active volunteer, working as an administrative assistant at Waldo County Senior Spectrum and covering double shifts at the Greater Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Center. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Belfast and the Midcoast Senior Singles Group. She enjoyed movies, theatre, music, walking, needlecrafts, puzzles, baking, shopping, decorating her home, and dining out. In addition to her family she had a large network of friends and colleagues, including her good friend, Jimmie Lee Dulude, who were a tremendous support system and brought her much joy throughout her life. She was predeceased by her husband, George; her sister, Adell (Weed) Watson and her brothers, Russell Weed and George “Bud” Weed Jr. She is survived by her daughter and her daughter’s significant other, Kathryn Stewart and Mark Hickson of Hampden and Searsport; her brother and sister-in-law, Calvin and Ellen Weed of Ellsworth; her cousins, Rev. Ted Smith and his wife, Doris, of Corinth and Jean (Smith) Harrington of Damariscotta and their children and grandchildren; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward Belmore of Bridgewater, Mass., Ruth Copson of Belfast; Walter and Helen Schuck of Campobello, S.C., Janice Stewart of Oviedo, Fla., Ray and Marjorie Stewart of Clearwater, Fla.; her nieces and nephews, Debra West, Rupert “Chip” Watson, Jr., Karen Linehan, Sue Parkes, Terri Cormier, Steven Weed, Gail Fullerton, Betty Meder, Joan Sirois, Debra Thompson, Linda Lefler, Angela Gonzales, Dale Stewart, Jeffrey Stewart, Ann Herring, Sherry Norton, Laura Stewart and their spouses, children, and grandchildren. She will also be missed by her feline companion, Mr. Pitt, and her granddog, Zachary. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at the Belfast United Methodist Church, Mill Lane, Belfast, with Rev. David Abbott officiating. Arrangements are under the care of the Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
