ELLSWORTH – John E. Kilgore Jr. died Dec. 30, 2004, at an Ellsworth health facility. He was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Wichita Falls, Texas, the son of John E. Kilgore Sr. and Lillian (Amery) Kilgore. John was educated in public schools, graduated Wichita Falls High School 1937; Phillips Exeter Academy 1938, elected to Cum Laude Society; A.B. Amherst College in June, 1941, elected to Phi Beta Kappa; entered Harvard Law School in September, 1941; entered U.S. Naval Reserve, Dec. 1941, commissioned Naval Air Cadet, April 1942, Ensign (Naval Aviator) Oct. 1942, rose to lieutenant, assigned to inactive reserve Dec. 1945; returned to Harvard Law School, Feb. 1946, and graduated in Jan. 1948. He was admitted to Texas Bar, Aug. 1948; was a partner at Kilgore & Kilgore, Dallas, from 1948-1957; was a partner at J. H. Whitney & Co., New York (Venture Capital) from 1957-1968; was a partner at John E. Kilgore & Co., (Venture Capital) from 1970-1983; and was founder of Cambridge Royalty Company, Cambridge Petroleum Royalties, Ltd. (England), Petroleum Royalties of Ireland, (Ireland). John was director of San Jacinto Petroleum Corp. and affiliates, from formation (1950) to merger with Conoco (1963); various non-public investments of J. H. Whitney & Co.; Cambridge Royalty Company from formation (1970) to merger with Global Natural Resources Inc., (1986); Cambridge Petroleum Royalties, Ltd. And Petroleum Royalties of Ireland from formation (1972) to sale to others (1980); Global Natural Resources, Inc., (1987-1994); Paine Webber Group (1975-present); St. Bernard’s School (New York) (1966-1971); American Symphony Orchestra (1964-1970); German Marshall Fund of the United States (1978-1989). He was a member of the legal committee, “Independent” oil companies negotiating entry into the Iranian Consortium (1954-1955), responsible for obtaining tax ruling permitting entry of the group; member of Board, Iricon Agency, Ltd., (representing Independent group in the (consortium); member of negotiation group forming Southwest Bachaquero Unit, first unitization agreement in Venezuela; represented San Jacinto Petroleum Corp. and its six non-major partners in negotiation with Shell, Creole (Exxon) and Mene Grande (Gulf); Chairman of “Russian” Committee of Board of Global Natural Resources, Inc., negotiating first American” upstream” joint venture in USSR (joint venture registered November 1990); served as Chairman of Global subsidiary participating in venture and as member of board of directors of joint venture until 1997. John is survived by his wife, Annie of Blue Hill; sons, John E. Kilgore III of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ralph A. of East Hampton, N.Y., Robert M. of Brooklyn, N.Y., Alexander G. of New York City, N.Y.; daughter, Constance P. Kilgore, N. Stonington, CT, and three grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at St. Francis By the Sea Church, 19 Hinckley Hill Road, Blue Hill, ME 04614.
