BANGOR – John G. Hawkins, 77, died Oct. 26, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Feb. 13, 1927, in Bangor, the son of Whitfield and Lillian (Knox) Gilbert. John served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the military police and was a guard at the Nuremberg trials. He owned the J-Hawk Grocery Store in Bangor for a number of years. He also worked for H.D. Smith for well over 30 years as their parts manager. He is survived by his wife, Louise (Pratt) Hawkins, of Millinocket; one daughter and her husband, Martha and Peter Kopteros, of Orrington; one brother and his wife, Jack and Gloria Hawkins of Florida; two sisters, Minnie Casper of Ellsworth, Marjorie and her husband, Phillip Riley, of Virginia; three grandchildren, Demetre and Dominic Kopteros and Lisa Worcester. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mona (Rogers) Hawkins; his brothers and sisters, Ethel Holloway, Homer Gilbert, Lindsey Gilbert, Shirley Caron, Ronald Gilbert, Celia Gilbert, Joseph Gilbert and Robert Gilbert. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Bangor with The Very Rev. Richard McLaughlin, pastor, celebrant. Interment will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
