WESTCHESTER, Conn., and NORTHEAST HARBOR – John H. “Sonny” Graves, 74, of Ponemak Village, Westchester, Conn., died July 16, 2004, at the hospital in Middletown, Conn., surrounded by his loving family. He was born Nov. 5, 1929, in Northeast Harbor, the son of Lawris N. and Bessie L. (Haynes) Graves. John was a machinist and mechanic for Kaman Aircraft in Bloomfield, Conn., for many years. He was an active member of the Colchester Fish & Game Club, Colchester, Conn. In his spare time, he was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He was a fan of the UCONN Huskies, The Boston Red Sox and NASCAR Racing. He is survived by three daughters, Lisa Graves, of Colchester, Conn., Kelly Rozanski and husband, William, of Manchester, Conn., Wendy Babcock and husband, Hal, of Salem, Conn.; a son, Mark Graves Sr., and wife, Sally, of Colchester, Conn.; 10 grandchildren, Mark Jr., Rachael, Billy, Melissa, Holly, Leigh, Heather, Lindsey, Dillon and Hunter; one great-grandson, Daniel; four sisters, Marion Peckham and husband, George, Jean G. Fernald and husband, Robert, and Sheila Smallidge and husband, Peter, all of Mt. Desert, Mary Gilley and husband, L. Wayne, of East Douglas, Mass.; two brothers, Walter P. Schurman Jr. and wife, Jean, of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Richard Schurman and wife, Betty, of Madison, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Graves, of Stillwater, and numerous extended family members and friends. John was predeceased by two brothers, Lawris E. and Thomas N. Graves. Funeral services are being held Monday evening, July 19, at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, Colchester, Conn. Interment will be Forest Hill Cemetery, Northeast Harbor, at a future date.
