MAPLETON – John P. Hoffses, 82, died early Friday morning, June 6, 2008, at a Presque Isle hospital. He was born March 15, 1926, in Castle Hill, the son of John L. and Beatrice (Howes) Hoffses. John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a jack of all trades, owned and operated a grocery store and operated a restaurant in Mapleton. John could do almost anything and always did it well. He raised a Grand Champion for the 4-H baby beef auction when he was a junior in high school. He was the master of Eureka Grange. He received the Community Service Award from Mapleton/Chapman and Castle Hill in June of 1999. He is survived by a son, Christopher J. Hoffses; two brothers and their wives, Roger and Gayle of Presque Isle and Eugene and Ina of Castle Hill; four sisters, Mary Rose Thomas and her husband, Clifton, of Sidney, Marjorie Murchison of Caribou, Maxine Perry and her husband, Tom, of Medical Lake, Wash., and Marion Guerrette of Presque Isle; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Richard, Ralph and Llewellyn Hoffses and his wife, Margaret; a sister, Pauline Peterson and her husband, Walter; and two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Murchison Sr. and Carl Guerette. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 9, at Hoffses Family Cemetery, Castle Hill, with Murray Boyles officiating. A reception will be immediately after at the Lions Club, Mapleton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Mapleton Lions Club or, for a deserving high school senior from Mapleton, Castle Hill or Chapman, to John “Johnnye” P.
