ELLSWORTH – John Silas Pullen, 89, died May 21, 2006, at his home with his loving family by his side. John was born Dec. 8, 1916, in Bangor, the son of Horace M. and Marjorie A. (White) Pullen of Danforth. John graduated from Danforth High School in 1934, Colby College in 1938, Harvard Law School in 1941, and was admitted to the bar that same year. While at Colby, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Zeta Psi fraternity, played basketball and was catcher for the varsity baseball team. In 1941, he started practicing law with Donald White in Guilford. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946, in military intelligence at the Pentagon, and saw service in the Pacific. He was commissioned as an officer Nov. 29, 1944 and was discharged as a First Lieutenant. He moved to Ellsworth in 1946 to practice law with Philip R. Lovell in the firm of Hale and Hamlin, and became a partner in that firm in 1949. He was sworn in as judge of the Ellsworth Municipal Court in June 1948, but did not complete his term, as he was recalled to the Army Jan. 2, 1951-June 30, 1951. He also practiced with the law firm of Blaisdell and Blaisdell until his retirement in 1980. John was well known throughout Hancock County and beyond as a top probate and real estate title attorney. He joined Baskahegan Lodge No. 175, A.F. & A.M in 1942, was a member and officer of the Ellsworth Luncheon Club, a member of the Ellsworth Jr. Chamber of Commerce, the Young Republicans Club, a member of the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth since 1949, and a member of the Maine State Bar Association for almost 65 years. He loved all sports, especially baseball and the Red Sox, and umpired games at Ellsworth High School for several years. He and his wife enjoyed golf, bridge and dancing. He is survived by three children, Lynne Carlisle and her husband, Robert, of Brewer, Barbara Harmon and her husband, Albert, of Hancock, and Donald Pullen and his wife, Jaye, of Trenton; four grandchildren, Jay Fernald and his wife, Casey, of Somesville, Stephanie Buzzell and her husband, John, of Groveland, Mass., Michelle Carlisle of Eddington, Michael Carlisle and his wife, Joanne, of Boston, Mass.; four great-grandchildren, Zachary and Joshua Buzzell, Alexzander and Anna Fernald; two brothers, Robert and his wife, Marge, of Waterville, Richard and his wife, Barbara, of Swanzey, N.H.; and six nieces. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Edna S. Pullen April 1, 2006. The family extends their deepest thanks and appreciation to Heartworks and the very special caring and compassionate caretakers that made it possible for John to remain at home during his final days. Visiting hours will be 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Constance Welles, of the First Congregational Church UCC of Brewer, officiating.
