HERMON – Joseph Fred McInnis, 82, passed away Jan. 24, 2004, at the Maine Veterans Home with his family at his side. He was born July 8, 1921, in Hermon, the son of Minola (Libby) and Joseph F. McInnis. His early years were spent at Ripogenus Dam where he and his sisters enjoyed the Maine woods as their backyard. He attended MCI and graduated from Greenville High School. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army Air Force. He retired from the New England Tel. & Tel. and remained active in the Telephone Pioneers of America. Joe also worked for Electrolux for many years and greatly enjoyed his interactions with the people he met. He was honored to be a member of the Anah Temple Shrine. He played clarinet with the band, sang with the Chanters and enjoyed his many Shrine trips. The church was always a guiding force in his life. As a member of both Hammond Street Congregational Church and Dover Foxcroft Congregational Church, Joe served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and was involved in many other church activities. He enjoyed gardening, family trips, and spending time at the camp he built on Wilson Pond. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary (Folsom); sisters, Goldie Phillips and Margaret McInnis; daughters, Nancy Houghton and husband, Dudley, of Hampden, Barbara McInnis and her companion, Stephen Rouse, of Washburn, Janet McInnis and husband, Richard Goodman, of Hermon, and Madeline Currier and husband, Stephen, of Lee; grandchildren, Stephanie Terry, Paula Page, Jeffrey Houghton, Timothy Howard, Elizabeth Howard, Julie Schmidt, Liane Currier and Laura Stacey; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Daniel McInnis. A memorial service will be held at Brookings-Smith, Bangor, at a date and time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, care of Anah Temple Shrine, 586 Main St., Bangor, ME 04401.
