BREWER – Joy K. Libby, 77, beloved wife of the late Galen C. Libby, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born Aug. 7, 1928, in Dover-Foxcroft, daughter of the late John D. and L. Pearl (Hall) Kirkpatrick. After graduation from Foxcroft Academy, Joy married Galen June 12, 1946. After their children were born, they moved from Bangor to Lincoln, where Joy worked in the town office; and then to Brewer, where she worked for the State of Maine, Eastern Corporation, and the Second Congregational Church. In 1966, they returned to Lincoln, where she worked for the school system. In 1970, they moved to South China, and Joy began working for the Maine Department of Labor. After retirement in 1985, they became “snowbirds” and spent several winters in Tucson. In 1986, they returned to Brewer. During their journey through life, Joy and Galen were blessed with many wonderful friendships. Throughout her adult life, Joy enjoyed making her homes inviting for family and friends. She constantly sought new opportunities to apply her talents in cooking, handiwork, and gardening. Never idle, she also learned to square dance, clog and line dance. Joy was a member of the East Orrington Congregational Church, where she helped establish the Memorial Garden, was a member of Ladies Aid and for several years served as a co-leader of the Creative Crafters. She was also a member of the Eddington Homemakers of Penobscot Extension. Joy is survived by daughter, Judy Hanscom and her husband, Rodney, of Holden; son, John Libby and his wife, Nicole, of Concord, N.H.; grandchildren, Wendy Libby and her husband, Steven Ades, of Montreal, Quebec, Brady Libby and his wife, Erin, of Gilford, N.H. and Megan McElroy and her husband, Garth, of Center Ossipee, N.H.; great-grand daughter, Hannah Ades of Montreal; brother, Leon Kirkpatrick and his wife, Gertrude, of Brewer; sister, Ruth D’Alessandro of Montville, N.J.; brother-in-law, Lincoln Libby and his wife, Frances, of Sun City, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Kent Libby and his wife, Marlene, of Holden; sister-in-law, Sue Marilyn Moore and her husband, John, of San Angelo, Texas; brother-in-law, David Libby of Mount Dora, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Sally Kirkpatrick of Pennsville, N.J. and Eva Kirkpatrick of Port Charlotte, Fla.; several cousins, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers, Walter, Earle, Glen, and Ray; sister, Rena; and in 1994 her husband, Galen. Friends may call 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Rd., Orrington, with Pastor Adam Soderberg, officiating. Interment will follow at Marston Cemetery, Snow’s Corner Rd., Orrington.
