YARMOUTH – Judith Stowe Ahlefeld, 86, died peacefully Nov. 22, 2005, with family at her side. Judy was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Cambridge, Mass., the only daughter of Irving E. Stowe and Mary (Ingalls) Stowe. The daughter of a Navy doctor, she lived all over the United States during her childhood, before settling in Portsmouth, N.H. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1941 and married Edwin Ahlefeld in 1943. They raised four children in Woodbridge, Conn. During her years in Connecticut, Judy enjoyed her friends and family, playing tennis, gardening, volunteering at Yale-New Haven Hospital and teaching pre-school. Judy moved to Yarmouth in 1981. She was involved in a number of volunteer activities at Maine Medical Center. She continued her love of gardening, caring for her devoted dogs and welcomed many beloved grandchildren to the world. In her later years, she enjoyed reading, knitting and cheering on her Boston Red Sox. Her youthful and independent spirit, extraordinary kindness and caring for friends and family will be deeply missed. Judy is survived by three daughters; Polly Ward of Freeport, Deborah Ahlefeld of Branford, Conn., Sally Burke and her husband, Rob, of Newburgh; a son, Ted Ahlefeld and his wife, Maureen, of Guilford, Conn.; grandchildren, Jeremy and Meagan Ward, Morgan and Ethan Burke and Kaitlyn and Devlin Ahlefeld; sister-in-law, Barbara Stowe; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Donald and Jack Stowe. A memorial service celebration of Judy’s life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday Dec. 10, at First Parish Congregational Church, Main Street, Yarmouth.
