COSTIGAN – Julia Marion O’Leary died 2 a.m. June 11, 2008, with her family at her side, at her home on the river, after a very brief illness. She was born April 10, 1929, in Manhattan, N.Y., to Eleanor Crowley and Raymond Madonna. Julia grew up in Rockaway Beach, N.Y., and then resided in many locations around the world. In 1989 she made her final home on the banks of the Penobscot River in Costigan, with her beloved husband of 30 years, Dennis J. O’Leary. Unconditional love and a wonderful sense of humor made their love a true romance forever. She was known to all as the “Blueberry Muffin” and could be seen each August delivering fresh blueberries around the state, from her daughter, Shannon and her husband, Steven Lion’s farm in Township 32MD. She was always active and out in the community as a member of School Board Union No. 90, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Old Town, Department of Maine and many community and charitable organizations. In addition to her husband, Dennis; and daughter, Shannon and husband, Steven, her kindness, generosity and friendship will forever be remembered by her granddaughter, Ilse Wind Fastook of Greenbush. She enjoyed a final visit with her only brother, Lt. Col. Raymond C. Madonna, U.S. Marine Corps, retired and his wife, Rene, of Kent Island, Md., and their daughter, Megan Lee; and will be remembered by her nephew, Ray Madonna. The family thanks her neighbors and friends in Costigan and Greenbush, for their loving care and aide in her final days. A celebration of her spirit will be held in September at Sunkhaze Farm, Township 32MD, where she will be interred at Sunkhaze Rest Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of Eastern Maine, 888 Union St., Suite 220, Bangor, ME 04401, a caring team, who helped the family in her final days.
