BUCKSPORT – Junior Smith, 82, died Nov. 9, 2005, at his home in Bucksport, surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with severe atherosclerosis and lung cancer. He was the husband of the late Katherine (Serviskey), who predeceased him in 1966 and later married Virginia (Sullivan) Gross who unexpectedly died in 1977. He was born Sept. 12, 1923, in Bucksport, the eldest son of Basil and Carrie Smith. He was employed for 38 years by Seaboard/St. Regis as purchasing superintendent and retired in 1981. He was an avid gardener, woodcutter and enjoyed farming, hunting and workhorses. During his latter years, Junior also enjoyed the company of his close friend and confidant, Elnora Woodman and her loving and attentive family. He is survived by three sisters, Arlene Freeman, Norma Dorr, Joyce Sanborn of Bucksport; one brother, Paul Smith of Winterport; and predeceased by his brother, Clifford “Bump” Smith, also of Bucksport. He leaves two sons and their families, Michael and his wife, Patricia, of Vero Beach, Fla., the late Kenneth of Bucksport who recently passed away in January, 2005 and Jeffrey also of Bucksport. Seven stepchildren, Norma and husband, Byron Drew, of Alabama, the late Jane Bouchard and her husband, Charles, of Alabama, Rodney and wife, Claudine Gross, of Orland, Roland and wife, Patricia Gross, of Searsport, the late Joyce Shorey and husband, William, of Bucksport, the late Terry and wife, Sue Gross, of Bucksport, and Billy and wife, Diane Gross, of Bangor. Seven grandchildren, Mark, Katherine, Danielle and Kristine Smith of Bucksport, Joshua of Beaver Creek, Ore., Marci-Smith Wheeler of Union and Megan Smith-Oldorf of New Berlin, Wis.; five great-grandchildren, including Margaret Lozier and Olivia Wheeler of Union, McKenzie and Anthoney Smith of Bucksport, and Madelyn Oldorf of New Berlin, Wis. Special thanks to the Bucksport Regional Health Center and Dr. Hans Duvefelt of Bucksport for their attentive care over the years. A private family graveside service with invited friends will be held Friday, Nov. 11, at Evergreen Cemetery in Bucksport officiated by Pastor Peter Remick of the Bucksport United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Junior’s memory to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation, P.O. Box 1626, Bangor ME 04402-1626.
