CAMDEN – Katharine Reed Spear, 98, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at her home in Camden. Born Jan. 18, 1905, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of William and Lida Jane (Hamilton) Reed. She was a graduate of Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., and then went to St. Lawrence University in New York. Katharine was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. In college, Katharine met her future husband, Forrest L. Spear, who was attending the agricultural school at the university. They were married in Brooklyn then moved to Camden where Mr. Spear built their home on Elm Street. Mrs. Spear worked as the bookkeeper and secretary for her husband’s business, the F.L. Spear Plumbing & Heating Co. for many years, which was located at 2 Bayview St. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Camden. A devoted wife and mother, she loved her home and enjoyed doing needlepoint up until this past year. Surviving is one daughter, Carolyn Roberts and her husband, Theodore, of Presque Isle; a son-in-law, Rev. Bradford Payne of Lincolnville; five grandchildren, Bradford Payne, II and his wife, Christine, of Sharon, Mass., Cynthia Payne McNeil of Waterville, Charles A. Roberts of Alaska, Philip E. Roberts of Presque Isle, and Deborah Demasso of Hampden; and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Forrest L. Spear, who died in 1987; her daughter, Julia Payne, who died in 1996; and one brother, Edgar Reed. Visiting hours will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at the Robert E. Laite Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden. The funeral service will be at 12 noon at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Camden.
