BROOKSVILLE – Kathleen ‘Kay’ Andrews, 95, died peacefully Dec. 30, 2007, at her home. She was born April 16, 1912, in Newton, Mass., the daughter of Herbert and Mabel Andrews. From the time she was a small child, Kay spent her summers on Little Deer Isle. Her family would board a steamboat in Boston and travel to the house her grandfather built just across from Pumpkin Island Light. Later on, her parents made their summer home in Buck’s Harbor, Brooksville, and since the early 1950s, Kay and her parents resided year-round in that house. Kay graduated from Newton High School and then Mount Holy-oke College, Class of 1934, where she majored in art history. Kay had a sharp intellect, was an avid reader, sailor, gardener and traveler. She created beautiful paintings and needlework, and was a fine knitter. She kept abreast of national events and politics right up to her last day. She had a great sense of humor and had just finished watching one of her favorite movies, “The Russians are Coming,” minutes before she passed on. Kay was down to earth, yet had an understated elegance about her and many people in her life felt the benefit of her warmth and kindness. Kay served Brooks-ville and the surrounding com-munity in many ways. She was one of the founders of Brooks-ville Free Public Library, served on Brooksville Planning Board, a Girl Scout leader and Blue Hill Memorial Hospital volunteer. She was a member of Buck’s Harbor Yacht Club since 1929, a member of Brooklin Garden Club and Blue Hill Congregational Church. Kay was predeceased by her parents, whom she lovingly cared for in their old age; her sister, Eloise Forest; her dear nephew, Joseph A. Forest; and her great-niece, Andrea Forest. She is survived by her nieces, Cindy Ann Forest and her sons, Taylor, Cameron and Leigh Miller, Jacqueline Forest and her children, Robert and Cassandra Sichel and Alexandra Forest Arata; and nephews, Haynes Stephens, Benjamin Forest and his partner, Danise, and their children, Tyger, Jasper and Dashyl Forest, and Susan Alexander. Also, Kay leaves behind her very dear feline companion, Simon, who gave her great joy. She will be missed by many friends who loved her very much. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at South Brooksville Methodist Church. Donations may be given in Kay’s memory to Maine Seacoast Mission, 127 West St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
